WHAT CAN PARENTS DO TO HELP
THEIR CHILD LISTEN AND SPEAK WELL?
USE MODELING

Do not make the child repeat it after you.

USE EXPANSION
Repeat what your child has said, but add details.
Example: If your child says, Jamie coat, you can say "Yes, this is Jamie's blue coat."

SLOW DOWN YOUR RATE OF SPEECH
Do this by pausing after phrases and sentences. Use Mr. Rogers speech as a model. Plan one play session per day with your child..at which time .you practice using a slower rate of speech.
USE SELF TALK
Talk about what you are doing
Talk about what you are seeing
Talk about what you are hearing
Talk about what you are feeling
USE PARALLEL TALK
Talk about what your child is doing
Talk about what your child is seeing
Talk about what your child is hearing
Talk about what your child is feeling
READ! READ! READ!
Perhaps most important.......read to your child every day,
let your child see you reading to yourself, listen to your child
as he or she begins to read.
IDEAS
for the parents of a one year old
Use sign language to stimulate speech and language development. Sign language will stimulate the development of oral language, and you and your baby will both learn a second language. Don't worry that your baby will substitute signs for words because as soon as he/she is able to say the word "verbalization" will become the easiest way to send a message and that is how baby will want to
communicate. In the meantime, signs provide a way for baby to express himself/herself, prevent frustration, and build vocabulary. Read colorful books with big pictures to your little one. Imitate your baby...this will become a fun game and your baby will learn the important skill of imitation. Use words to tell about everything that you and your baby are doing, seeing, hearing and feeling while you're together.
